Q&A: how effective is doxycycline for acne?

Question by : how effective is doxycycline for acne?
ok so I’ve been suffering from moderate acne and really oily skin since I was around 13. I’m now 18 and nothing has worked (only works short-term). I was on erythromycin for about 8 months and my skin really cleared up, but as soon as i got off, things went back to normal. My dermatologist then gave me tetracycline and I used that for 3-4 months, but there was no difference in my acne. She’s now prescribed me doxycycline. Has anyone used this before? was it effective? side effects? Please help guys!! Also I’m getting really tired of being on antibiotics all the time, it’s obviously gonna be harmful for me in the long term, so are there any herbal remedies?
any advice is appreciated, thanks xx

Answer by erbs2005
Doxycycline acne is used for more severe cases of acne, like the other tetracycline related antibiotics of which it is a derivative.

Some suggest that minocycline and doxycycline are slightly more effective in treating acne than tetracycline itself. All of these antibiotics treat acne by affecting the growth of bacteria that is involved with acne infections.

Some things that affect the absorption of doxycycline acne treatments include vitamin and mineral supplements like calcium, iron, magnesium, and sodium bicarbonate, as well as antacids.

These should be taken at least two hours beforehand. Also, medications like warfarin, the contraceptive pill, and penicillin do not mix well with doxycycline. The pill may not be as effective and so should not be relied upon to prevent conception whilst taking doxyxyline.

Potentially serious symptoms from doxycyline acne treatments are: rash or itching; severe diarrhoea or sunburn; flaking skin; swelling of the face, lips or tongue; bruising more than normal; and urinating less often.

If any of these symptoms develop, go to a hospital or doctor immediately.

Also, if any of these symptoms occur, get immediate medical attention – severe stomach cramps; watery and severe diarrhoea, which may be bloody; and fever. Even if these symptoms develop after discontinuing use of doxycyline acne treatments, they could indicate serious problems. They relate to the fact that doxycyline can disturb the balance of bacteria in your bowel, causing disease relating bacteria to multiply.

Less serious symptoms, that usually signify an allergic reaction, associated with doxycycline acne treatments include hives, a skin rash, or itching; fainting; facial swelling which can cause difficulties in breathing; or asthma, wheezing or breath shortness.

If you suffer symptoms of an allergic reaction, you should see your doctor as soon as possible. If they develop into a severe allergy, they can affect our air passages and make breathing difficult.

Pregnant and breast feeding women should not take doxycycline acne treatments as it can cause liver problems with pregnant women, and bone problems with developing babies. Plus teeth discolouration and swelling of the brain in children.

Symptoms of liver damage are – yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, and abdominal pain. Anyone taking doxycycline acne treatments should seek immediate medical attention if these symptoms occur.

If you’re sick of taking acne medications where the acne returns when you stop using them, then check out this safe and popular natural acne treatment .

There are no side effects, its natural so no harm is done to your liver or skin. And best of all, people report their acne clearing up permanently after an average of three months. That may seem a bit unbelievable but they have a proven, three year track record. With all types of acne.

How can I stop being resentful towards my mom for having me with my awful father and scarring my life?

Question by usfreezemaiheart: How can I stop being resentful towards my mom for having me with my awful father and scarring my life?
She had me when she was (still) poor and when she was in her 40’s and with a sociopath dude. I try to look past it…but I get resentful at times…
As a kid she would yell at me nearly daily for things that were out of my control (ex. money problems, being overweight, not being married, being older, etc.). Even when I was tormented for three years in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade for my bad looks/dress and I cried to her about wanting to look normal…she just complained about how she looked…and when I visited a childhood friend for instance, afterwards she would be like, “she is sooo exotic and gorgeous.” and then tell me that I was (pretty much) the opposite. Now I have horrible self-image…even when she gained weight and needed to go on diets she would say, “WE need to diet.” although I’m size 00. I always think how fat and ugly I am…
Also…the rest of my family is blonde…but i’m brunette and the color looks awful on me so I have to bleach my hair a bit lighter (my dad had dark hair sooo)
My mom gave me strange motos as a kid such as, “marry a rich man.” and would tell me how awful men were (such as my father) and stuff…so I still have trust issues because of that.
As a kid she made me visit my father who wouldn’t even let me have stuffed animals and was in solitary confinement for many years etc…
I wanted to play sports, but she forced me to learn guitar…I appreciate it now…but I still wish I had been allowed to do sports instead.
She always had weird people in my life…and forced me to hang out with her friends…like some stalker lady etc.
I did all the house work…as a kid she scared me into doing it by telling me that if I didn’t clean the house that the neighbours would call child services and I would be placed in an orphanage and abused.
Anyways…what brought this up again is that i am almost 19 and finally out of the house…but my acne from when i was 13 is still horrible and my mom always refused taking me to the dermatologist because HER acne as a kid cleared up at around 16/17/18 (it always seemed to change as I grew older)…She doesn’t know about my father/his families skin…I always wonder if his family had awful skin…
Anyways…sometimes I get flash backs and stuff and feel fat and ugly…I know I have distorted self image although the acne is apparent…my boyfriend’s mom points it out before giving me herbal remedies *sigh*
Sorry for the length and for this being more of a rant…
but seriously…How can I get over this stuff? I still haven’t found a way to do it…Thanks ^^

Question by spidermonkeyfingers: Does anyone know of a great medicated shampoo for dogs?
I have an English Bull Dog with skin allergies and I am trying to find a really good medicated shampoo. Just so everyone knows…my vet has tried many different types and we haven’t found the right one for her. So please do not write back saying for me to ask a vet. I have obviously already done that to no avail. Now I am just looking for people that hae used good shampoos and can recommend one. I also love herbal remedies and would be very open if anyone has any home remedies for dog baths. I use cinnamon to keep fleas away in tandem to her monthly flea pill and it works great. Any suggestions?

I have a 6 year old Bulldog. (The breed is NOT called an English Bulldog, BTW) Try this one: Magic Coat, made by Four Paws….Hypo Allergenic medicated shampoo for pets with aloe vera & coal tar, use by Veterinarians for the relief of dandruff, dermatitis, itching and dry skin. (this is what it says on the bottle)

Add: Sly Kitty, I’m sorry but if you go to the AKC website, you WILL see what the breed is called. BULLDOG IS what my AKC registration papers say. Go check it out if you don’t believe me. I *KNOW* for a fact that I’m 100% correct on this one! French Bulldog…yes. English Bulldog…..no.

Is Acne the worst in America vs. foreign countries?

Question by marblebeaches: Is Acne the worst in America vs. foreign countries?
This may be going out on a limb, stereotyping, or whatever you would want to call it, but I feel like america has such an outbreak (so to speak) of acne cases and bad skin, versus places like Japan where the skin is beautiful (i mean i know there IS acne there, but it seems like it’s a lot less than here,) and India (where they have nice, wholesome, herbal remedies and yada yada.)

My question to you is: Is this a completely generalized view that Ihave…
and why does it appear that many people’s skin in foreign countries is so much more beautiful than here? Whattttttttttttttt do they do right! lol Because I have medium acne and for some freaking reasno can NOT get rid of ittttt!!!!!!

Genital warts possible from a shared razor?

Question by H2Oskier: Genital warts possible from a shared razor?
While shaving my pubic area, I got a few tiny cuts from my razor but thought nothing of it. Within a week or so, I began developing bumps around the base of my penis. I’ve had docs call it both Molluscum and Warts, and am tired of getting no sure answer. When the bumps appeared, I had 2 other roommates sharing the same shower (and who knows what else), so I’ve wondered ever since whether I contracted warts from one of them using my razor. Is this type of contraction possible, or is it much more likely that this was a dormant HPV that appeared after I nicked my skin?

It has now been almost 2 years, and I have tried everything; from herbal remedies, to self OTC freezing methods, to Aldara. Looks like my next step will be cryotherapy.

Been with my wife for 3 years and she hasn’t had ANY symptoms. Previous doctor treated me with Aldara. The medication hasn’t worked worth a s**t.

Any thought or idea would be greatly appreciated!! This sh*t sucks.

Answer by skincancerdoctor
yes it’s possible to get molluscum contagiosum from sharing razor. Most unlikely to get warts this way though it is remotely possible (if bathroom was warm and damp and flatmate had used razor very soon before you). If molluscum they will go away eventually though you can speed the process up by painting clear nail polish on them daily till they fall off (about two weeks). If genital warts they will recur no matter what you do. You need a definitive diagnosis – dermatologist and/or a surgical biopsy of one lesion

How to make dog feel better from allergies?

February 11, 2012 by

Question by blr275: How to make dog feel better from allergies?
I’ve got a german shepherd who has horrible allergies. He is allergic to most foods, pollens, grasses, and yeast infections of the skin. He is incredibly itchy and will scratch hours into the night, even though he is on a vet prescribed medicine in which he takes 3 pills, 3 times a day and occasionally takes benedryl. And about once a year he gets allergy shots. They help but he can’t get them often because the steroids are dangerous.

He has scratched so much that his back legs are weakened, he has given himself hot spots, and he has removed a lot of his hair (mainly ears and one side, not completely naked just spotting), and he scratches from barely being touched.

We have to wash him about twice a weak (vet orders) to remove the yeast from his skin (we moisturize him also, since bathing removes needed oils from his skin). But he can’t have a lot of the soothing shampoos (he’s allergic to oatmeal). What might help his skin or end some of the iching that we can apply to him? Also, Since his back legs are flimsy now are there any exercises that might help him out? Are there any herbal remedies (drops to mix with water), or anything that has maybe helped your dog?

Extra:
The dog doesn’t get along with others at all, so exercises can’t really be going to a dog park or anything like that, plus when he is outdoors in grass his scratching gets worse.
He doesn’t have mange. We had the allergies confirmed through a blood test so we have the exact list of what he is allergic to. Here is the list:

Blue grass/June Grass
Orchard Grass
Bermuda
Timothy Grass
Johnson Grass
Ragweed
Pigweed
Cocklebur
Sage
Waterhemp
Cottonwood
Box Elder/Maple
Elm
Mulberry
Sycamore
Aspergillus
Cladosporium
Rhizopus
Stemphylium
Nigrospora
Housedust/mites
Poultry Mix
Milk
Corn
Oat
White Potato
Kelp
Alfalfa
Cotton
Malassezia

He’s on sentinel flea prevention and doesn’t have fleas or ticks.

Benadryl is good but you already knew that. The meds that he is on, is it called Vanectyl-P (small pink tablet), if so, that’s a great med for allergies. Another option which helps for yeast infection is Surolan. This med helps when your dog gets yeast infection or an allergic reaction, which fits perfectly for your dog. Which brand of food is your dog on? There’s MediCal hypoallergenic, but there are others. Your dog may be allergic to corn, soy, wheat or a certain meat. Feel free to email me if you have any other questions.

Q&A: Home remedy for hormonal acne?

February 9, 2012 by

Question by ♥ Kelly Renay ♥: Home remedy for hormonal acne?
For the love of god I’m going insane. When I was a teenager my acne wasn’t as bad as it is now. My face, back, shoulders, arms, neck… It’s so annoying and painful. I even had one pop up on my stomach and on my leg. Its ridiculous! It’s only been getting worse as I get older (I’m 23 now). I can’t take it anymore. I read online that usually young women can get this type of acne in their early 20s due to hormonal changes and it can last all the way until their 30’s. I know their is an oral pill could take and a topical cream from a dermatologist but that’s the thing. I don’t have any money right now and won’t for a while to go to a dermatologist and I’m wondering if there’s any kind of over the counter option or something I can use to relieve myself of this even if only a little. I’m not talking about over the counter acne creams or any of that crap. Proactive didn’t even work for me. Is there some kind of vitamin or herbal supplement or something along those lines that could help with this? My skin used to be so nice and it’s getting ruined and I’m starting to get scars. Thanks for anyone who answers!

Answer by mels211
Are you getting enough zinc, vitamin A and selenium? Those are all important for skin. Take a good multivitamin if you aren’t already (and can afford it). Lots of cruciferous veggies to help balance your hormones and get rid of the toxins. I use retin a cream for my acne and it makes a big difference, so if you can afford that I would talk to your doctor. I don’t recommend going on the pill simply for acne unless it’s really bad. The pill just messes your hormones.
