Question by carlaerickson: herbal remedies for cystic acne?
i am 23 and am attempting to get off of the birth control pill. i am already beginning to get a few cysts on my chin. it doesn’t matter how clean i keep the area; it’s hormonal and is coming through my skin. i am a health nut. i eat organic, use essential oils, cleansing teas and baths, and get enough exercise– don’t drink much and avoid milk and have cut down on gluten… both which don’t seem to affect my acne much anyway. the pill really works for me! but i want off of it because i fear it may cause more problems down the road…
i am going to see a naturopath about this, but just wondering if any of you have some advice?

I’ve never tried it myself, but I’ve heard a poultice of the Thimbleweed root is a good astringent for treating acne.

Your body’s hormones will probably balance back out once you have been off of the pill for a while and the acne is likely to go away on its own. Time is probably the best natural remedy in this case. 🙂

    Cystic Acne Diet

Let’s start with most simple part of this program: Cystic Acne diet. When it comes to diet, it is very important to avoid eating Toxins and Foods that Kill. Please follow those links and learn what are The Toxins I am talking about and what are those ” Foods that Kill”. Now, important part of your diet should also be Water Cure. Please, become familiar with Water Cure. Your Diet should contain: Foods That Heal, Vegetable juices, Fats that Heal, Unrefined Sea Salt. Also, try to understand food tolerance. You can not find the right Cystic Acne diet, unless you fully understand and learn about food tolerance.

Take some time to implement and learn all what you have read here, and then continue reading further.

Because this is such a severe type of acne which can result in life long scarring, I would consult with a dermatologist on any and all treatments.

    Cystic Acne in Women

Over activity of the sebaceous glands usually results from either the presence of excessive amounts of male sex hormones (androgens) or an increased sensitivity of the sebaceous glands to normal levels of male sex hormones.

One approach to the treating male hormone-dependent acne is to lower the levels of male hormone production. For this diagnosis, it is important to establish the presence of excessive male sex hormones, the cause of its excess and the location of its production. This is done by simple blood tests for testosterone, free testosterone, and adrenal hormones such as DHEAS and perhaps 17-OHP. There is also a form of excess male hormones associated with insulin resistance– a new disorder currently under intense investigation. It should also be pointed out that excessive production of male sex hormones by a female not only causes acne, but also can result in excessive hair growth, menstrual disorders and subsequent lessened fertility.

Therefore, the presence of acne in females may be an important sign of an underlying endocrine (hormonal) problem. This underlying problem, if caused by ovarian or adrenal gland disease and left undiagnosed and untreated, could lead to disorders of the menstrual cycle, PMS, polycystic ovarian disease and other disorders of the reproductive system. One way to treat this health care problem is an endocrinological approach in order to establish a specific diagnosis, determine the location of excessive male hormone production (the adrenal glands or the ovaries) and develop a therapeutic plan to treat the underlying cause and counteract the effects of the male hormones. Appropriate monitoring of the hormone levels by a laboratory specializing in hormone analysis and evaluation is essential for determining the type of medication, its dosage and its effectiveness during therapy. Do not try this on your own.

Among the endocrine treatments for acne are birth control pills. In theory, birth control pills shut down the ovary that is producing inappropriate male hormones, and then substitute a more balanced hormone mixture.

For a natural treatment of hormonal imbalances we suggest Vita Moor.

If you’re looking for accurate acne information, best to see a dermatologist. Some people believe doctors are predisposed to take the easy way to deal with acne… prescription drugs. But, with many, this simplistic answer may not be the appropriate course of action. Some feel that such prescription drugs just treat the symposium and not the underlying cause. But, a local dermatologist is still your best starting point.
For me personally, I discovered a great informational acne treatment site. Not only is there good information/articles but I got their audio e-book and following it’s advice can now say that my acne is a thing of the past! Keep in mind, were all different and there are various types of acne, so what works for some may not be totally effective for all.

Bottom line, hang in there, you will get past this! Sincere best wishes and good luck.
Oh, by the way the site that helped me is:

I would suggest a cleansing diet. I did this and lost 11 pounds and 16 inches in 9 days. I like the program since it works by giving your body nutrition through protein shakes with digestive enzymes and vitamins and then cleansing out the toxins. We get toxins in our bodies from pesticides, preservatives, water, pollution, medications, food additives etc…. These toxins enter our bodies and get coated with fat. To remove the extra fat, we need to get rid of the toxins through cleansing. The program also has a natural diet pill to help your metabolism and curb cravings. It works and it works fast. I lost 30 pounds in 5 weeks and I feel great. My skin has improved as well from the cleansing. You can get more info at this toll free number 1-877-587-4647. I think cleansing is really important to health and weight loss. Give it a try and good luck!

You may be right about it being hormonal if it comes when you go off the pill. It might even be PCOS (Polycystic ovarian syndrome).
The pill uses a synthetic estrogen. It’s probably upsetting your natural female hormones levels (estrogens and progesterone) which can make the androgens (male hormones) more dominant than they normally are. Severe acne and cysts are a common result of that kind of imbalance.
Your best bet would be to try natural progesterone in a cream formula that you apply to your skin. It’s a natural female hormone and will help you get your natural estrogen/androgen levels back in sync. The best brand is Life-Flo.
You don’t need to put it on the cysts, just any fatty part of the body; breasts, thighs or tummy for instance.
It may take a few days to see a difference , maybe even a week or two. For the immediate term try sesame seed oil on the cysts. It will dry them up and make them less noticeable.
    Good Luck!
