Skin care the natural way

We are so used to having a vast array of skin care product to choose from that we scarcely give a thought as to how people managed before. Caring for skin is not a modern obsession but was practiced in ancient times too. In those days the only way to care for skin was by using herbs, in the same way that people turned to herbs for medicines.Modern technology resulted in the replacement of natural herbal skin care routines as synthetic compounds became available. These products replaced the herbal treatments that were often used and which have now to a large degree been forgotten. The success of synthetic products has been the result of convenience, the commercialisation of skin care and laziness. We no longer have to make them afresh. However, the added preservatives often render them less effective than the herbal remedies and there is a renewed interest in herbal products. Even so, people are still reluctant to concoct them at home.

Aloe Vera is an extract from Aloe plant and is probably the best herbal product available for caring for our skin. When it has been freshly extracted aloe Vera is a natural hydrant and this helps to sooth skin. It also helps in healing cuts and treating sunburn as well as its tendency to clean the skin as well. Various other herbal preparations are known to possess cleansing properties too. Dandelion, camomile, lime flowers and rosemary herbs, are some examples. Their benefits are most effective when they are combined with other herbs such as tea. Tea is one herb that displays a variety of skin care attributes. Its extracts are used for treatment of skin that has been damaged by undue exposure to UV radiation.

The antiseptic properties of herbs cannot be underestimated in the care of skin. Herbs such as lavender, marigold, fennel and thyme all possess antiseptic properties. Both lavender and rose water help tone the skin. Oils prepared from herbal extracts offer other means of treating the skin. Tea tree oil, lavender oil, borage oil and primrose oil are some popular oils used in skin preparations. Extracts from fruits such as bananas, apples and melons often find their way into shower gels.
